It is about the systems a small group can command.

The East India Company is not a model to admire. It is a warning about what happens when commerce, capital, logistics, legal authority, information, and force compound without enough accountability. Any modern analogy has to begin there, or it becomes unserious.

But if we only treat it as a warning, we miss the operating lesson.

These companies did not scale by simply wanting to be large.

They learned routes. Copied maps. Built ships. Designed financial instruments. Created administrative systems that could outlive any single person. They turned judgment into process, and process into infrastructure.

The machinery mattered. Not the ambition alone — the machinery.

A small group of merchants, financiers, clerks, and directors built operating systems that eventually reached far beyond what their raw headcount should have made possible. They used ships, ledgers, contracts, charters, trading posts, legal privilege, financial instruments, and administrative discipline to coordinate activity across oceans.

Again — the history is violent and extractive. It cannot be softened into a clever business case. But it does reveal something important about scale:

Headcount is not the same thing as capacity.

A small group can do very large things when it controls the right infrastructure.

That distinction matters in the age of AI.

AI changes the relationship between headcount and capacity.

A small team with the right operating system can now do work that once required much larger organizations. Research, drafting, analysis, customer support, design, operations, workflow routing, knowledge management, and strategic synthesis can all be augmented by infrastructure that compounds human judgment.

But the deeper shift is not speed.

The deeper shift is coordination.

AI changes what becomes possible before the old systems are ready to recognize it. It changes what one person can initiate and what five people can maintain. It turns knowledge into reusable systems. It reduces the cost of iteration. It makes work easier to route, remember, remix, and improve.

That is an infrastructure shift.

And infrastructure shifts change who can build.

For overlooked founders, overlooked regions, and smaller institutions, this matters.

The old model often required permission before capacity could be seen. You needed the right network, the right office, the right proof pattern, the right institutional wrapper. You needed enough people to look credible before the system believed you could build.

AI does not erase those barriers.

But it changes the terrain.

It gives disciplined builders a chance to create operating leverage before consensus arrives. It lets small teams build the proof layer sooner. It lets people turn knowledge, process, and judgment into infrastructure.

But only if they are intentional.

The future will not belong to small teams simply because they are small.

It will belong to teams that know how to design the systems beneath their ambition.

The East India Company shows the dark side of scaled infrastructure without accountability. Commerce became sovereignty. Logistics became force. Administration became control. And at no point did the governance capacity grow with the power.

AI gives us a new infrastructure moment.

The moral work is to make sure leverage does not outrun responsibility.

Infrastructure multiplies intent. If the intent is extraction, infrastructure scales extraction. If the intent is stewardship, infrastructure has to be designed to protect stewardship as the system grows.

So the better questions are not: can a small team build something large?

Increasingly, yes.

The better questions are:

What are we learning that should become a system?

What are we repeating that should become infrastructure?

What can be automated without removing judgment?

What should never be automated because care, consent, context, or accountability matter too much?

Where are we scaling usefulness?

Where are we scaling harm?

Small teams can now build large systems.

The question is whether they can build systems worthy of the power they create.

This reflection was sparked in part by Empire's episodes on the British and Dutch East India Companies.

What operating layer are you building beneath your ambition?

<picture><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!kXTj!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fe91774b5-8e8e-4f84-b4fe-c8f1a58492d8_2000x1333.jpeg" width="1456" height="970" data-attrs="{"src":"https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/e91774b5-8e8e-4f84-b4fe-c8f1a58492d8_2000x1333.jpeg","srcNoWatermark":null,"fullscreen":null,"imageSize":null,"height":970,"width":1456,"resizeWidth":null,"bytes":null,"alt":"Small Team, Big Success — It is the front door.

What matters is whether the organization behind the front door can explain what it does, route the right opportunities, preserve context, make decisions, follow through, and keep learning without forcing one person to hold the whole system together.

That is where a lot of organizations break.

Not because the mission is weak.

Because the infrastructure is.

May Reality Check: Memory Is Not Infrastructure

The operating layer underneath the work is now the risk surface.

AI is already inside daily operations.

AI agents are being adopted faster than oversight systems.

Regulators are moving toward documentation, classification, and proof.

Institutional memory failures are showing up in high-stakes environments.

Public launches expose whether an organization is ready to be understood.

This is not a technology story.

It is a systems story.

This Month’s Intelligence

AI is already inside the work.

Gallup polling reported by AP found that 12% of employed U.S. adults use AI daily at work, nearly one-quarter use it a few times a week, and roughly half use it at least a few times a year.

That means AI is already operating inside organizations before many leaders have named where it belongs, who owns it, or what happens when it affects a decision.

Source

AI agents are moving faster than governance.

Deloitte’s State of AI in the Enterprise research, as reported by Times of India, found that 23% of surveyed companies are already using AI agents at least moderately, with projected adoption rising to 74% within two years. The same reporting notes that only about 21% report robust safety and oversight mechanisms.

The issue is not adoption.

The issue is that work is being handed to systems before organizations have built the controls around that work.

Source

Regulators are asking for the paper trail.

The European Commission released draft guidelines for classifying high-risk AI systems under the EU AI Act and opened public consultation through June 23, 2026.

The direction is clear: governance is becoming classification, documentation, accountability, and proof.

Values statements will not be enough.

Source

The Signal: Organizations are not short on ambition. They are short on operating capacity.

That gap shows up everywhere: AI tools entering workflows without rules. Agents taking on work without mature oversight. Regulators asking for documentation that many organizations do not have. Risk information existing somewhere, but not becoming shared memory, owned action, or timely escalation.

This is why B. PM Consulting exists.

We help organizations build the systems underneath the work: strategy, governance, operations, stewardship, narrative, and decision architecture.

Because clarity is not a tagline.

Clarity is infrastructure.

Reintroducing B. PM Consulting

B. PM Consulting helps organizations turn complexity into operating clarity.

We work with founders, operators, nonprofit leaders, funds, and mission-driven institutions that are carrying serious work without enough structure underneath it.

Sometimes the problem is strategy. The organization has strong ideas, but no clear path from decision to execution.

Sometimes the problem is governance. Decisions are being made, but not documented. Ownership is assumed, but not assigned. Risk is visible, but not routed.

Sometimes the problem is stewardship. The organization has partners, funders, clients, donors, or community relationships, but no system for tracking context, commitments, follow-up, and trust.

Sometimes the problem is narrative. The work matters, but the message does not make it easy for the right people to understand, engage, hire, fund, sponsor, or partner.

Those are not separate problems.

They are symptoms of the same issue: the system underneath the work is too thin.

B. PM Consulting helps build that system.

Introducing BPM Brain

BPM Brain is the operating intelligence layer behind BPM Brands.

It preserves context. It routes work. It documents decisions. It turns meetings into tasks, tasks into artifacts, and artifacts into reusable infrastructure.

It keeps the work from disappearing into Slack, email, transcripts, screenshots, and memory.

BPM Brain was not built because we wanted another tool.

It was built because the old way does not hold.

Important work gets discussed.

Some of it gets assigned.

Less of it gets documented.

Even less becomes reusable.

Then the organization has to start over.

BPM Brain interrupts that cycle.

For B. PM Consulting, it is proof of practice. We built the operating system we needed. Now we use that discipline to help other organizations build the systems they need.

What Leaders Should Do Now

CEO / Board

Name the five workflows most dependent on founder or executive memory. Assign one owner, one documentation location, and one review cadence for each.

CMO / Brand

Walk through every public-facing pathway: website, newsletter, donation page, partner inquiry, speaking inquiry, and social CTA. If someone takes action, confirm who receives it and what happens next.

General Counsel / CCO

Identify where AI or automated tools are already being used. Document who authorized them, what data they touch, and what escalation path applies when outputs affect people.

Chief of Staff / Ops

Build a one-page operating map showing where decisions, tasks, contacts, campaign assets, meeting notes, and source-of-truth documents live. The gaps are the workplan.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

From B.’s Desk

We see the same failure pattern across organizations that otherwise have everything they need to win.

The thinking is strong. It is a closed loop: DVRGNT Ventures as the capital and diligence layer, The Wealth Salons as education and relationship infrastructure, B. PM Consulting as the operational and strategic support layer, and The Foundry Network as the place where relationships, knowledge, and credibility compound into institutional form.

That framing matters.

Capital without education produces dependency.

Education without execution produces stagnation.

Execution without narrative produces invisibility.

The loop only works when all four are functioning together.

That is the BPM Brands thesis in practice. It is also why this reintroduction to B. PM Consulting belongs inside the larger ecosystem story. We are not building isolated programs. We are building the infrastructure that lets access, capital, execution, and narrative reinforce one another.

Dinou’s post is a reminder that infrastructure is not abstract.

It is built by people who take ownership of the work before the world understands why it matters.

B. It was not. But because this was the year I stopped waiting for permission to define who I am.

A few weeks ago, I received a letter dated April 17 confirming that my divorce is officially final. It arrived on May 16.

When it came, I realized something unexpected: I did not feel broken. I felt clear.

But I need to be honest about what came before clarity.

As a Black person who was assigned female at birth, I was programmed, in a lot of ways, to be Clair Huxtable.

Clair had the career. The family. The house. The intellect. The presence. The children. The command of every room she entered. She was elegant and exacting and somehow always composed. She was the blueprint many of us were handed before we even knew we were holding one.

But the thing about trying to be Clair Huxtable is that I am not sure we ever really got to see Clair fail.

I am sure she did. Everyone does. But that was not the part of her we were shown.

So when I filed for divorce, one of my first thoughts was: I failed.

This is embarrassing.

How could I fail like this?

And then, slowly, another truth arrived.

I had not failed. I had made a choice.

And that is something I tell founders all the time: if you do not make a choice, a choice will be made for you.

In 2024, I made a choice. A hard one. A life-altering one. A choice that forced me to confront who I was outside of a marriage, outside of a shared identity, outside of the version of myself I thought I had to perform in order to be respectable, successful, and safe.

For ten years, I was part of a unit. We were the Pagels-Minors.

So I had to ask myself: who am I by myself?

Who is just B?

That question took time to answer.

First privately. Then publicly. Then operationally.

There is a line people often repeat about crisis containing both danger and opportunity. Whether or not the language lesson is exact, the idea stayed with me because divorce was a crisis of identity, character, money, family, and future all at once.

I had to decide whether I was going to spend all of my capital trying to make the crisis disappear, or whether I was going to think my way through it.

And that distinction matters.

I had become used to being able to pay for problems to go away. When you have worked at some of the best companies in the world, when you have earned more money than you ever imagined as a kid, it is easy to confuse access with strategy.

But this year reminded me that the most powerful tool I have is not capital.

It is critical thinking.

So I learned. I asked questions. I went to self-help centers. I figured out the process step by step. I defended myself with ethics, discipline, and care. I protected my relationship with my son. I protected the companies I am building. I protected the future I still believed was possible.

There was another moment this year that changed me too.

I survived a devastating car accident.

I drove over a cliff, through an embankment, and totaled my car. And somehow, incredibly, I survived with only a few scratches.

There are moments in life that reorganize your understanding of time.

That was one of them.

Because after something like that, you stop negotiating with yourself about whether your life matters, whether your work matters, whether your purpose matters.

You realize very quickly that if you have another chance to build something meaningful, you should probably stop wasting time pretending you do not know what you are here to do.

That experience became part of the infrastructure of everything I am building now.

Not out of fear.

Out of stewardship.

I have been fortunate to have so many opportunities in my life. So many at-bats. So many moments where I could rebuild, rethink, redirect, and try again.

And that gratitude, that awareness of being given another chance, drives almost everything I do now.

It is part of why I care so deeply about helping other people build sustainable futures too.

And I did it.

That changed me.

Now, when I look at the economic uncertainty around us, when I look at communities navigating crisis after crisis, I keep coming back to one thing:

I am resilient.

My community is resilient.

My neighbors are resilient.

The question is not whether we have resilience.

The question is: how do we build systems that remind us of it, protect it, and turn it into power?

This year forced me to fight for my future, my stability, my businesses, my identity, and my family all at once. I defended myself in family court while making impossible founder calculations: legal fees or operational runway. Attorneys or software renewals. Immediate survival or long-term sustainability.

And while all of that was happening, I still had to protect what mattered most: my relationship with my son, my companies, and my ability to keep building a future worth inheriting.

So I became better.

More disciplined. More honest. More technical. More strategic. More intentional.

I stopped pretending I was only one thing.

Yes, I am an activist. Yes, I am trans. Yes, I am Black. Those things matter deeply to me.

But I am also a serious business and product leader. An operator. A builder. An infrastructure-minded founder with two decades of experience learning how systems succeed, fail, adapt, and scale.

This was the year I fully reclaimed that part of myself.

And this year, one of my biggest birthday wishes was to relaunch the B. Pagels-Minor website.

Not because a website solves everything.

But because I want people to finally see the work clearly.

I want people to understand the ecosystem we are building, the purpose behind it, and the ways they can engage, support, partner, hire, invest, sponsor, donate, and build alongside us.

I built the BPM Brain™ because I realized something simple: almost everything gets better when people have better systems, better memory, better planning, and better tools for turning lived experience into action.

B. PM Consulting, where we help organizations get clear, build strong foundations, and scale with clarity and accountability.

It helps us run DVRGNT Ventures, where we back visionary founders and scalable ideas that drive impact and long-term value.

It helps us grow The Wealth Salons, where we create rooms for high-level connections, actionable knowledge, opportunity, and economic power.

And it helped us launch Stewardship Labs, because we kept seeing the same problem across the ecosystem: founders, whether nonprofit or for-profit, were being asked to produce world-class outcomes without world-class infrastructure.

The idea was simple. So many leaders do not need another inspirational panel. They need basic operating support. They need cleaner systems. Better documents. Stronger governance. Clearer workflows. A real plan. A way to stop holding the entire organization together with memory, duct tape, and midnight courage.

That is what this year taught me over and over again: infrastructure is care.

When you give people better systems, you give them time back. You give them dignity. You give them room to think. You give them a fighting chance to build something that can outlast the moment.

Over the past year, The Wealth Salons has helped hundreds of people through our in-person and virtual spaces. We have created rooms for founders, operators, community builders, investors, and professionals to talk about money, access, ownership, career power, and the mechanics of building wealth in a world that does not hand out maps evenly.

And now we are preparing for our largest The Wealth Salons event ever this October in Los Angeles.

That matters to me.

Because these rooms are not just events. They are infrastructure too.

They are where people find language for what they are building. Where someone meets the person who opens the next door. Where a founder gets clearer about their capital strategy. Where someone who has been carrying everything alone realizes they do not have to keep doing that.

We are also planning our first fall East Coast sweep, with the goal of bringing this message into major cities like New York, Washington, D.C., and Miami.

Because economic equity cannot be built in one room, one city, or one network alone.

We have to keep partnering across the entire ecosystem. We have to keep building awareness around The Great 38™. We have to keep naming the truth: there are brilliant founders on the frontier who are not waiting because they lack talent. They are waiting because the systems around them have not been designed to recognize them fast enough, fund them fairly enough, or support them deeply enough.

With DVRGNT Ventures, we have been learning that lesson in real time.

When I founded DVRGNT Ventures in 2022, I knew the idea mattered. I knew there was something powerful in building a venture platform around overlooked founders, economic equity, and a different way of seeing opportunity.

But like so many people who start companies, I did not know what I did not know.

Now I do.

And I am grateful for that.

One of the clearest examples is O’kra, a company that fit so much of what we believed from the beginning. We saw the thesis. We saw the founder. We saw the possibility. We helped them move through a major brand transition, and now they are in stores where people can actually walk in and buy the product.

That is the work.

Not theory. Not vibes. Not “diversity” as a decorative slide.

Actual companies. Actual products. Actual shelves. Actual customers. Actual outcomes.

And that is why our own infrastructure had to grow up too.

This year, I had to make decisions that forced BPM Brands to become more independent, more disciplined, and more self-sustaining. I had to look at tools, systems, expenses, vendors, and assumptions and ask: does this actually fit the company we are building?

That is why we moved away from systems that were built for companies with a different scale, different economics, and different needs.

That is also why bringing in our new CFO matters so much. It is not just a staffing update. It is a signal that we are becoming the company we said we were building: independent, rigorous, accountable, and ready for the long arc.

Because if we are going to invest in people on the frontier, we have to understand frontier-building ourselves.

We have to know what it means to be underestimated and still build well.

We have to know what it means to be resource-constrained and still choose quality.

We have to know what it means to create systems that do not depend on being invited into someone else’s room.

That is what BPM Brands is becoming.

A company focused first and foremost on economic equity.

A company that believes better processes create better decisions.

Better decisions create better companies.

Better companies create better outcomes.

And better outcomes can create a better world.

This year, we are also beginning to roll out our next pillar: The Foundry Network, our media and entertainment home.

It will begin with Truths and Tribulations, a podcast about what it actually takes to build, survive, lead, repair, and tell the truth while systems are shifting around us.

Because stories are not separate from infrastructure.

Stories help people understand what is possible. Infrastructure helps us make what is possible repeatable.

So that is what we are building now.

Through B. PM Consulting, we help organizations tune up how they operate, communicate, and grow.

Through DVRGNT Ventures and The Great 38™, we support founders building extraordinary things from places and communities too often overlooked.

Through The Wealth Salons, we create rooms where people can access relationships, knowledge, and opportunities that move them closer to economic power and ownership.

Through The Foundry Network, we are building the media and entertainment layer for the stories, conversations, and cultural work that help people make meaning while they make change.

And because today is my 41st birthday, I am asking people to consider donating $41 or more to support The Wealth Salons.

Donate here: <a Pagels-Minor doesn't just enter spaces; they redefine what those spaces are for. As the visionary founder behind DVRGNT Ventures, The Wealth Salons, and B. PM Consulting, B. has built real power across tech, capital, and culture without asking permission. Their track record includes leading global product teams responsible for over $20B in revenue and skillfully deploying capital through DVRGNT Ventures. Today marks another pivotal moment as B. extends this distinctive leadership to the board of Northeast Valley Health Corporation (NEVHC). This appointment is an intentional step to apply B.'s strategic acumen and sharp intellect to the vital realm of community health, embodying their ethos of "virtuous capitalism" and creating "scale with teeth" in the non-profit sector.

The Boardroom Reimagined: Expertise Meets Urgent Purpose

B.'s journey from Mississippi poverty to managing millions has consistently broken every rule the old model was built on, and their results have redefined the benchmark. They weren’t supposed to lead the room—so they built the room, the table, and the terms. This unapologetic spirit and strategic foresight are precisely what B. brings to NEVHC. B. deeply understands the systemic importance of accessible healthcare, emphasizing that "federally qualified health centers to me are one of the most important aspects of the American healthcare system". This perspective underscores a commitment to fortifying the foundational elements of well-being, leveraging B.'s expertise in product strategy and organizational development to solve complex problems with innovative solutions.

Northeast Valley Health Corporation: A Beacon of Community Well-being

Northeast Valley Health Corporation (NEVHC) is a cornerstone of community well-being, spanning the San Fernando and Santa Clarita Valleys. This federally qualified health center serves a remarkable 75,000 to 85,000 patients annually. NEVHC’s commitment extends far beyond traditional clinical care, actively addressing critical community issues such as homelessness, vaccine access, and job assistance. This holistic approach to health and social determinants of well-being aligns perfectly with B.'s vision of creating equitable systems. What makes this appointment particularly impactful is B.'s deep, personal connection to NEVHC; they were a patient there and, notably, one of the first trans patients. This lived experience provides B. with an invaluable firsthand understanding of the community's needs and the organization's progressive approach to inclusive care.

Strategic Vision: Driving Health Outcomes with Scalable Solutions

In this new role, B. will leverage their extensive experience in product strategy, organizational development, and impact investing from DVRGNT Ventures, The Wealth Salons, and B. PM Consulting. B. recognizes that NEVHC is "several magnitudes larger and trying to solve even more complex problems" than many other organizations, making it an ideal platform for their thought leadership. NEVHC has expressed keen interest in B. becoming their public-facing advocate, a testament to B.'s powerful and distinct voice, further amplifying the critical work of community health on a broader platform. B. shared their excitement about the transformative potential of this role, stating, "I'm very excited to be a part of this process and learning about what is needed and then hopefully being able to take that back to the work that I do with The Wealth Salons and DVRGNT Ventures and […] helping increase […] helping improve health outcomes for […] individuals especially for individuals from […] historically underinvested communities".

Investing in a Healthier, More Equitable Future

This board role is a powerful demonstration of B.'s unwavering commitment to creating economic equity and building systems that truly serve people. It reinforces their belief in increasing human potential through accessible resources and strategic, impactful leadership. B.'s presence on the NEVHC board signifies a fusion of groundbreaking financial acumen with a profound dedication to community, proving that true leadership creates "scale with teeth" and tangible, lasting change.

Join the conversation and follow B.'s journey as they bring their distinctive, unapologetic approach to healthcare equity.

Subscribe to B.'s insights here B.
